Hillcrest Competes Well at State Qualifier
The Hillcrest Ravens track and field teams ended their regular season with an exclamation point at the 1A State Qualifier meet at WACO Thursday night. The weather was perfect with temperatures in the mid-60s and nearly calm winds under a blue sky. Every Raven performance for both the girls and boys teams was either a personal best or the first attempt at the event with one lone exception. The state qualifier meet at WACO was one of ten 1A qualifier meets across the state. The winner of each event automatically qualifies to advance to the state meet next week. Then, the next best fourteen performances across the entire state also qualifies to advance. For the girls team, Madeline Fox continued to demonstrate her wide range of abilities by scoring points in the 3000 meter run and the 400 hurdles while recording a personal best in the 100 meter dash. Fox’s 3000 meter time of 13:23 was thirty-six seconds faster than her previous best time. She placed fifth in the event. Fox also placed seventh in the 400 hurdles with a personal best time of 1:22.14. Yani Gutierrez-Larios also recorded a personal best in the 100 meter dash. Fox and Gutierrez-Larios joined with Samara Jimenez and Ivana Ebersole to run the 4 x 100 meter relay. The Ravens also had a full roster in the throws events. Sarah Miller placed twenty-first in the shot put with 22 feet 11.5 inches. Samara Jimenez exceeded her previous best shot put throw by 2 feet nine inches. Her new personal best is 19 feet 10.5 inches. Yani Gutierrez added a foot to her best discus throw by throwing 78 feet nine inches for eleventh place. Ivana Ebersole extended her best discus throw by eight feet with her throw of sixty-three feet nine inches.
