Ravens Cross Country Team Competes Amongst Strong Competition at Bud Williams Invitational

The Lady Raven cross country team competed amongst strong competition in challenging conditions Thursday in Iowa City.  Iowa City High hosted the Bud Williams Invitational at the Iowa City Kickers Soccer Complex.  The field had a number of large schools as well as smaller schools with strong teams.  The sunny skies and 86 degrees added an additional challenge to racing the course.  Leah Bontrager was the Ravens first finisher placing forty-second in 23:29.  Morgyn Nafziger moved up to the teams number two position placing eighty-eighth in 29:55.  Delaney Shaw was the next Raven and the next finisher.  Her time was 30:01.  Julia Boller placed ninety-first in 31:26.  Hillcrest did not have enough runners to have a team score.  Dubuque Senior won the team title.  Gabrielle Cortez of Cedar Rapids Prairie was the individual winner finishing in 19:29 on the 5.05K course.

Senior Collin Miller led a quartet of Raven cross country runners in the boys varsity race.  Miller placed eighty-sixth in 22:10.  Quang Huynh was the teams next finisher placing ninety-eighth in 29:05.  Huynh had to overtake teammate Garrett Hurst in the final meters of the race to earn his position.  Hurst finished one place back in 29:06.  Isaac Lybeck placed one hundredth in 30:23.  “The hot weather and missing half of the boys team members took its toll on our performances today.”  Junior Ford Washburn of City High won the race for the second year in a row.  His time was 16:31.  Iowa City High won the team title.  Hillcrest did not have the required five finishers to earn a place in the team standings.

Monday October fourth the cross country teams host the Hillcrest Academy Invitational on the school campus and in the Joetown woods.  The meet features thirteen boys and girls high school teams.  The meet starts at 4:00 p.m. with two junior high races followed by four high school races beginning with the girls junior varsity race at 4:35.  Come support the runners.
