STEM Conference

Malia Sedlacek, Kaitlyn Swantz, Kennedy Roth, Sarann Durflinger Leah Bontrager, and Esther Hughes

This fall math instructor, Gloria Yoder, took a group of female students to Iowa State University for their Women in Science and Engineering Conference. Leah Bontrager, Esther Hughes, Sarann Durflinger, Kennedy Roth, Malia Sedlacek, and Katelyn Swantz attended the event for girls in 9th and 10th grades.  It was a fun day of workshops with hands-on activities, a tour of the Engineering campus, lunch, and two keynote speakers.  The first speaker told about Diana Nyad, who on her fifth attempt, swam 103 miles from Cuba to Miami without a shark cage.  The message to the girls attending the conference was to never give up on your dreams and to act strong even when you don’t feel it.  Students learned about weather maps, coding, Engineers without Borders projects, building solid towers, and other related topics.
