The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls soccer teams swept away River Valley Conference foe Bellevue in both ends of a doubleheader Tuesday at the Wellman Rotary Soccer Complex.
The Golden Hawk girls opened the night with a 2-1 victory. The lead belonged to Mid-Prairie 1-0 at half, thanks to a Meadow Flynn goal, her 15th of the year. The Comets would equalize early in the second 40 minutes, but Avery Helmuth delivered the game winning goal, and the defense did the rest for the Hawks to make that tally stand up. Following the match, Flynn, Helmuth and Sam Wunderlich joined KCII Sports to talk about the win.
Flynn said, “The first half of the game we started off really well. Kealy (Roberts) had a really good through-pass to me. We were playing fast and got the ball to the back of the net which felt really good to start off right.”
Helmuth added, “We had really good through-balls tonight. Our forwards were faster than their defenders. You could tell that right away. It was about having an aggressive mentality even though it was really physical. (On the game winning goal), they took it down past some defenders. I offered a drop, I was wide open so I shot far out.”
Wunderlich continued, “Defensively we were really communicating. We had to clear the ball quickly out and not let them get it to their two forwards, they were pretty fast. Communicate and work together to decide whether we were going long with the ball or dropping it.”
Bellevue won shots on goal 5-4 and corners 3-1, but the Golden Hawks won the scoreboard. Along with the goals from Flynn and Helmuth, Flynn and Ruth Witthoft each had an assist. Niva Helmuth made five saves in goal for the win. Mid-Prairie is now 10-3 on the season as Bellevue drops to 5-4-2.
Mid-Prairie had their way with the visitors in the nightcap, taking a 4-2 win. It was all Hawks in the first half, building a 3-0 lead and ultimately going to break up 4-1. Bellevue would get a tally in the second half but draw no closer. Following the match, Mid-Prairie’s goal scorers Ashton Townsend, Jonathon Adam and Matthew Troyer talked with KCII sports about the win. “This was great! It’s really good for the team, and we’re starting to work a lot better together. It’s about talking, slowing down and building as a team. Tonight we stayed resilient, we stayed locked in. We let up one (in the second half) but nothing else. We got the job don
Townsend said, “(My goal) came on a corner, at that point it’s about finishing. Being in the box, being ready and hitting it in when you get the chance. Matt (Troyer) and I were right there and then I hit it to the corner.”
Adam added, “As soon as I saw the ball get dropped back to Kale (Miller) I knew it was going long. You have to just mentally prepare yourself for that and be ready to score”
Troyer continued, “I drove around some people. I saw an opportunity and buried it in the bottom left corner of the net. It felt really good to get a quick, early one.”
Mid-Prairie won shots on goal 18-6 and corners 6-2. Troyer scored twice the lead the way with Adam and Townsend each adding one. Zion Price, Kale Miller and Troyer each had an assist. The win went to Mac Yoder in goal who made five saves. The victory snaps a three-match-skid for Mid-Prairie as they move to 4-8-2 on the year. Bellevue stands at 5-7-2.
