The Ravens claimed second place in the Southeast Iowa Superconference with a 4-2 win over Central Lee in Donnelson, one night after winning over Mediapolis. Hillcrest opened the scoring eight minutes into the match when Lincoln Miller sent a long throw into the box where Jaxson Brokaw flicked the ball over the goalies head for the 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later it was Kale Bailey’s turn to take the throw-in. Charlie Hughes attacked the ball with his head knocking it down and just across the goal line as the goalie tried in vain to scoop the ball off the line. Central Lee got a goal back on a long crossing ball into the box to make the half time score 2-1 in favor of the Ravens.

Playing with some tired legs after the Mediapolis game, the Ravens relied on some younger players to pick up some of the load. On the back line, Beckett Miiller and Landon Allen stepped in and played well in defensive roles. At midfield and forward Abe Widmer, Calvin Meller, and Brenden Neuschwander filled in, creating some good chances while giving some of the starters a chance to rest weary legs.

The second half opened with Isaac Birkey beating a defender as he cut to the goal, but then getting knocked over. Lincoln Miller calmly converted the Pk to make the score 3-1. Central Lee responded strongly, scoring off a long throw in two minutes later to make it a one score game.

Both teams created chances and struggled to take control of the match in what became a back and forth battle. As play continued Jaxson Brokaw tracked down a long pass into the box, where he gathered the ball and went to turn towards the goal. As he turned Brokaw was clobbered, earning a second penalty kick. Miller again converted the PK to make it a 4-2 score with 28 minutes left in the match.

The defense unit held up well as Central Lee tried to send balls into the box, while Hillcrest did its best to clear balls out of the area. Garrett Bontrager had one of his strongest games in goal, recording 11 saves during the match.

Hillcrest improves to 6-7 overall and 6-2 in conference play. The Ravens finish the regular season Friday against Sigourney Keota in Sigourney.
