Raven Seniors Shine Bright in 5-1 Senior Night Victory

Hillcrest 5, Mediapolis 1
Four Hillcrest Ravens seniors led the way to victory on Senior night, each scoring a goal in a 5-1 victory over Mediapolis. The first half was a bit of a snooze with little happening offensively until Mediapolis hit a long shot from distance to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

With some minor adjustments at halftime, primarily dealing with Mediapolis’s offsides trap, and a pep talk by the seniors, the team came out with more energy the second half and immediately began creating offensive pressure. Six minutes into the half the Ravens earned a corner kick which they executed to perfection as Isaac Beachy put the ball across the box, where Isaac Birky passed the ball to Rowen Miller who sent the ball into the net to tie the game. When the clock turned to 27:59 Birky beat a defender and sent the ball through the back line where Angel Sambrano found the corner of the goal to make it 2-1. With the clock still on the 27th minute,  the Ravens won the ball back and got it to Rowan Miller who took a strong shot from distance only to see it ricochet off the bar. Waiting to pounce on the deflection was Jaxson Brokaw who sent the ball right back into the goal for the 3-1 lead.

Play settled down for a while though the defensive unit anchored by Lincoln Miller, Simon Willems, Rhys Bender and Beckett Slaughbaugh along with midfielders Danny Meyers and Kale Bailey shut down most of the Mediapolis offense. The Ravens put together another run this time getting the ball to Brokaw who beat a defender but was then pulled down in the penalty box. Lincoln Miller stepped up to take the PK calmly converting it to make the score 4-1.  With a minute remaining on the clock Isaac Birky took an assist from Brokaw and finished the scoring at 5-1.

With the win Hillcrest improves to 5-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Tuesday the Ravens travel to Central Lee in a key battle for a second place spot in the conference.

In JV action, Calvin Meller scored the opening goal. Enoch Adza added to the tally before Meller added two more goals for the 4-0 win. The JV finishes its season with a 5-1 record.

Hillcrest honored their seniors that participated in Track & Field & Soccer. Golf will be honored during the baseball and softball senior night.
