435 and counting . . .
Fans witnessed a special moment on Saturday, February 7, as Hillcrest Academy played against Burlington Notre Dame in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout Championship game. In the game, Rowan Miller ’26 officially claimed the title of all-time assists leader, breaking a longstanding record that had been held for over thirty years.
Miller came into the game needing only 6 ‘dimes’ to reach the career assist record of 435, which belonged to Jason Hershberger ’92 and had stood untouchable for since 1992.

While points often receive much emphasis in the record books, assists describe a more in-depth basketball narrative. The assist embodies trust, understanding, and unselfish play. The traits of a point guard to read the court, pick up the opposing players, and choose the appropriate pass at the appropriate moment has been a key component of Rowan’s career.
It is no trivial task breaking a record that has endured for more than three decades. Congrats to Rowan for such an incredible feat. In moments like these we are reminded that Hillcrest’s tradition of athletic excellence is continuing, one great pass at a time.

While points often dominate the headlines, those who understand the game of basketball know that the assist is the ultimate measure of a teammate. It represents vision, unselfishness, and an understanding of the court. This season, Hillcrest Academy fans witnessed yet another masterclass in playmaking as Rowan Miller ’26 did more than just lead the Ravens, he completely rewrote the program’s history books.
Entering the 2025-26 season, expectations were high for the junior point guard. Miller had already established himself as a premier facilitator, having set the school’s single-season record just a year prior with 163 assists. However, this ‘163’ mark proved to be only a temporary placeholder. With a knack for finding the open man, Miller didn’t just chase his own record; he shattered it. Ending his senior season with an incredible 189 assists, whether it was a cross-court skip pass or a perfectly timed entry into the post, Miller’s 189 dimes set a new gold standard for Hillcrest basketball.
As Rowan Miller concludes this historic chapter of his career, he leaves behind a record book that looks very different than it did when he arrived. With 481 career assists and a single-season record of 189, Miller became the all-time career assist leader, surpassing the mark of 435 held by Jason Hershberger ‘92 for 34 years.
