Ravens Outlast Panthers in Five

In a Thursday Southeast Iowa Superconference match that went the distance in Packwood, it was the visitors from Hillcrest Academy that brought home the win. The Ravens finished the job by scores of 21-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-18 and 15-13. Hillcrest leaders included Claire Withrow with 26 assists, six kills, three aces and two blocks, Niva Helmuth with 15 kills, five aces and two blocks, six kills for Ruth Witthoft, Claire Miller and Stavia Miller with 15 digs each. Claire Miller and Brynna Boshart added three aces each. The Ravens rose to 10-4 with the win as Pekin dropped to 3-8.

Four Union area volleyball teams, including hosts Cardinal, descended on Cardinal High School for Saturday volleyball action. The Comets were joined by Southeast Iowa Super Conference North sides Hillcrest Academy, Highland and Pekin as well as Moulton-Udell and Louisa-Muscatine.

Hillcrest had the best showing among area teams at the event. After a 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 15-13) win over Pekin on Thursday, the Ravens took down the Panthers again Saturday 2-1 (13-25, 25-20, 15-9). Hillcrest also defeated Moulton-Udell (25-6, 25-13). Niva Helmuth led the way with four kills against the Eagles while Brynna Boshart had an excellent match from the service line with seven aces.

Raven Volleyball Takes Three of Four at Cardinal

A pair of local Southeast Iowa Superconference volleyball teams took the court Saturday in Eldon for the Cardinal Comet Tournament.

Hillcrest Academy won three of their four matches on the day including a 25-6 and 25-13 sweep of Moulton-Udell, a three set win over Pekin 13-25, 25-20 and 15-9 and a three set win over the home Comets 23-25, 25-9 and 15-8. The Ravens only setback came in a second matchup with Pekin, which the Panthers took 25-20, 17-25 and 15-13. Hillcrest leaders by the numbers included Claire Withrow with 42 assists, 17 digs and five aces. Niva Helmuth had 28 kills, six aces and five blocks. Brynna Boshart had 17 digs and nine aces. The Ravens are 13-5 after the weekend.

For Highland it was an 0-3 day with losses to Pekin 25-9 and 25-13, Louisa-Muscatine 25-22 and 25-21 and Cardinal 23-25, 25-14 and 25-12. Highland leaders included 26 digs and 16 assists for Alexa Hahn. Larissa Murphy with 25 digs, 21 digs, 14 kills and two blocks for Ava Sexton. After the weekend, Highland is 4-6.
