Career week for Malia Yoder and Delaney Shaw

Career week for Malia Yoder and Delaney Shaw

Two Hillcrest Raven seniors made their mark in the pitching circle and at the plate last week, helping the Ravens softball team complete an undefeated week of 4-0 with victories over New London, Pekin, Wapello, and Waco.

Last Monday, the Ravens started the offensive power in Winfield against New London by winning 11-7, which was highlighted by a 1st inning 2-run home run by Malia Yoder. That home run tied for the career lead with teammate Delaney Shaw and two former softball standouts, Calli Shaw and Avery Blauvelt.

With another big victory over conference rival Pekin at home Tuesday night, 9-7, it led to traveling to Wapello on Thursday for a key match-up against the Arrows, where they knocked Hillcrest out of the postseason a year ago.

But it was the battery duo of Malia Yoder and Delaney Shaw to helped propel the victory 10-8.  With one out in the 6th inning, Malia Yoder tallied her 6th strikeout of the game and, more significantly 400th career strikeout to help the Ravens to victory for the first time over Wapello in 12 years.

The next night, it was all Ravens against Waco with the special highlight of the game coming off the bat of Delaney Shaw where she hit a ball landing near the parking lot over the left field fence to break the career home run record over her teammate, Malia, a former player in Avery, and ultimately her sister, Calli.  The Ravens would go on to win 20-0 at home vs. the Warriors.
