From Bleachers to Masterpieces

Ag Construction Students Give New Life to Hillcrest Union’s History

The echoes of cheers and the stampede of excited feet may have faded from the old bleachers at Hillcrest Union, but their story is far from over. For years, the bleachers stood as a silent witness to countless sporting events, school assemblies, and community gatherings. Now thanks to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Ag Construction students, these weathered wooden planks have been given a second life, transformed into a variety of impressive projects that showcase both skill and sustainability.

Under the guidance of their instructor, Mike Severino Patterson, the students embarked on a hands-on learning experience, transforming the aged wood into a range of creative and practical projects. The projects varied in complexity, allowing students of all skill levels to participate and develop their abilities.

“This project has been an incredible learning experience for our students,” says Severino Patterson. “Not only have they gained valuable skills in woodworking, measurement, and design, but they’ve also learned about the importance of repurposing materials and reducing waste. It’s a real-world lesson in sustainability and resource management.”

The project has also fostered a sense of connection to the school’s history. By using materials from a beloved campus landmark, the students are creating tangible links to the past. Each project carries a piece of Hillcrest Union’s legacy, a reminder of the countless memories made within its walls.

The finished projects are a testament to the students’ hard work and creativity. They not only demonstrate their growing skills in the Ag Construction program but also showcase the potential of repurposing and the value of giving new life to old materials. The old bleachers, once a fixture of Hillcrest Union, now live on in a new and meaningful way, thanks to the vision and talent of these young builders.
