Ravens Middle School Cross Country Team Finishes Strong at Statewide Meet

The Hillcrest Ravens middle school boys cross country team placed fifth at the Dick Washburn
Middle School Statewide Cross Country meet on Saturday in Ankeny. Calvin Meller led the team
placing third individually in the two-mile race finishing in 11:28. The meet was hosted by the
Iowa Track and Field + Cross Country Coaches Association on the campus of Ankeny Centennial
High School. There is no qualifying meet prior to this statewide event. The 1A race combined
athletes from 7th and 8th grades scoring the top four from each school. Jaxson Brokaw was
the second scorer for Hillcrest, placing sixteenth overall in 12:16. Simon Willems placed sixty-sixth in
13:47. Evan Slaubaugh was the Raven’s fourth scorer placing 115th in 15:03. Also running were
Troy Yoder (15:14), Merle Cronquist (15:59) and Lucas Beachy (18:43). Meller, Willems and
Yoder all ran personal best paces in the race.
