Bontrager breaks school record in the 800 at state meet

Senior Leah Bontrager breaks school record in the 800 meter run.

Senior Leah Bontrager punctuated her high school track and field career with an exclamation point.  Bontrager broke a twenty-six year old school record in the 800 meter run placing fourteenth at the state meet Saturday in the process.  2:28.97 is the new record.  Melinda Leichty set the previous record in 1996.  “Leah did an excellent job of managing two sports this spring.  She was a starter for the Mid-Prairie soccer team.  Once soccer season started she did her track and field training on her own.  Leah competed in both sports throughout the spring only missing one track meet due to a soccer game.  Leah runs every day and completed some challenging workouts during the spring,” according to Hillcrest track and field coach Marty Gingerich.  Bontrager will continue her studies and competitive running career at Central College.
