Ravens soccer falls to Columbus

Senior Aiden Krabill

Hillcrest 1, Columbus 2

Playing as the “away” team on it’s home field, because of field conditions and lack of officials at Columbus, the actual match took about as many twists and turns as the arrangements made to actually play.

Early on, the game looked to be a defensive struggle as both teams had difficulty mounting much offensive pressure. Early on, the Ravens broke through for a one-on-one opportunity but failed to find the net. With 11 minutes left in the half, a Columbus player fell in the box and was awarded a penalty kick, which they successfully converted for the 1-0 half-time lead.

In the second half, Hillcrest applied early pressure which paid off when Micah Gerber sent a pass to Jorge Canchola who beat one defender and scored the equalizing goal nine minutes into the half. The Ravens kept up the pressure creating three, one on one chances, but failed to capitalize. As time wound down, Columbus pushed the ball towards their goal and successfully got off a shot, which deflected off a defender and into the goal.

The Ravens responded, pushing guys forward as the last few minutes of the game ticked off the clock, creating several chances but not finding a way to equalize the score.

Hillcrest drops to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Ravens return to action Saturday morning hosting Cedar Valley Christian at 10:00 am.
