Ravens Track & Field Set Personal Records in the Columbus Early Meet

Senior Aaron Hershberger won both hurdle events at the Columbus Early Meet Monday night in Columbus Junction.  Hershberger won the 110 meter high hurdles in a tight race with Thomas Eschman of Central Lee.  Aaron’s time of 17.47 seconds is a new personal record.  Hershberger also won the 400 meter hurdle race but in a more convincing fashion.  His time of 1:02.17 was three seconds ahead of second place and also a new personal record.  Aaron also competed in the 100 meter dash placing ninth in a new best time of 12.63 seconds.  Quang Huynh was also in the 100 meter dash finishing in 14.40 seconds.  Huynh ran the 200 meter dash in 30.12 seconds.  This was the first time Quang had been in attendance at a track and field meet.

Senior Madeline Fox made her debut competing for Hillcrest Academy at the varsity level by scoring 16 of her team’s 17 points.  Fox won the B division 400 meter hurdle race with a time of 1:29.46.  She also placed third in the 100 meter hurdle race with a time of 20.44 seconds.  This was her first time competing in the 100 meter hurdles.  Fox also raced the 100 meter dash finishing in eighth place with a time of 15.33 seconds.  Yani Gutierrez placed eleventh in same event with a time of 16.50.  Hillcrest was well represented in the throwing events.  Sarah Miller placed seventh in the shot put with a best throw of 24 feet 8 inches.  Samara Jimenez also competed in the shot put with a best throw of 15 feet 8 inches.  This was her first time competing at a meet.  Gutierrez had the team’s best discus throw of 59 feet 1 inch.  Ivana Ebersole competed in her first track and field meet throwing the discus 51 feet 8 inches.

Monday was the first track and field meet for Hillcrest Academy.  The 2020 season was lost due to the COVID-19 shutdown.  The team’s most recent competition was the state meet in 2019 when Suzanna Yoder competed in the 100 and 400 meter dashes and Leah Bontrager competed in the 800 meter run at the state meet while wearing Iowa Mennonite School jerseys.
