Ravens host Early Bird cross country meet

Taryn Leichty

Hillcrest Academy hosted the Early Bird cross country meet September 1 on the school’s campus and in the nearby Joetown woods.  Masked athletes and fans scattered across the athletic fields and on the shaded trails to cheer on the runners.  Hillcrest runner Leah Bontrager ran an excellent race placing eighth in 22:54, behind seven runners from Iowa City High.  Bontrager ran the course 50 seconds faster than she did at the Early Bird in 2019.  Julia Boller took nearly two minutes off her time from last year at this meet.  She placed twenty-sixth in 27:21.  Taryn Leichty was the team’s next finisher placing thirty-sixth in 30:35.  Sophomore Rowan Boulter of City High won the race in new meet record time of 20:23.10, taking six seconds off her own record set last year.  City High won the girls team race with a perfect score of 15. Senior Madeline Fox and sophomore Hannah Chalupa competed in the junior varsity race.  Fox placed fourteenth in 25:31 and Chalupa placed thirty-sixth in 40:34.  This was the first race as a Raven for Fox and the first cross country race ever for Chalupa. Thirty-nine runners finished the girls varsity race, and thirty-seven girls completed the junior varsity race.
