Ravens volleyball opens with a tournament at Fairfield

Yesterday’s tournament was the season opener for the Ravens volleyball team. Match one was against Eddyville-Blakesburg – dropping the match 0-2 sets. Set one was 18-21 and set two was 10-21. Highlights from this game include: 100 percent serve efficiency for the team, with Malia Sedlacek leading the team with two aces during the match. Yanitza Gutierrez lead the team in kills during the match with two, while Sedlacek and Sophie Marshall both had one kill.  Gutierrez also lead the team with two assists,  while Norah Yoder had one. Match two was against Albia – again dropping the match 0-2 sets. The score of set one was 15-21 and set two was 8-21. Highlights from this match include the girls having a serve efficiency of 91 percent, with Sedlacek  leading the team again in aces with one.  Esther Hughes lead the team in kills with five, Marshall had two, and both Sedlacek and Gutierrez had one. Yoder lead the team with assists at five and Gutierrez had one. The team had 22 digs in this match with Grace Miller and Sedlacek leading the team with six digs each. Lastly, the third and final match of the night was against Fairfield – dropping the match 0-2 sets. The score of set one was 18-21 and set two was 15-21. Highlights in this match include the team serving efficiency of 87 percent with both Evelyn Gerber and Gutierrez leading the team with one ace a piece. Hughes lead the team with two kills in this match and Gerber had one. Hughes and Gutierrez had one assisted block and Marshall had a solo block as well. The team had 14 digs in this match, eight of them belonging to Miller.  Coach Taylor Kurtz commented, “The team did remarkable as a whole and worked amazingly as a group. There were so many positives to take away from the matches. The girls fought hard in each game and I truly feel that they left everything that they had on the court. They gave so much effort and there is no doubt that the girls had a great time last night. This season is about improving and I have no doubt that we will continue to do so!”
