Girls Fall to Winfield & Cardinal

The girls took to the road on Thursday at Winfield Mount Union and lost to the lady wolves, 25-53. The guard combo of Esther Hughes and Yani Gutierrez paced the Ravens as both reached double figures. Hughes recorded 13 points and picked up three steals, while Gutierrez added 11 points and pulled in seven rebounds. Leah Bontrager rounded out the scoring with a free throw.

The girls returned home for the SEISC Shootout against Cardinal on Friday night and dropped the contest, 38-52. Gutierrez led the Ravens with a double-double and a new career high of 26 points and 11 rebounds. Hughes also reached double figures recording 10 points to go with four rebounds and two steals. Sarena Gerber added a bucket and pulled in four rebounds.

“We played well in spurts against Winfield on Thursday night and were able to return home on Friday and put together more of a complete game,” Hillcrest head coach Kari Heusinkveld said. “I thought the girls played hard back to back nights and I’m very pleased with the effort and focus we saw, especially against Cardinal. Yani got back on track and found her rhythm offensively and when she’s playing well it really sparks this team. It’s the time of the year where we’re playing a lot of games which is fun. Short term memory is good, you have to be able to take a few items to refocus on and then come out the next night and do better with those things. That’s what we saw from the girls from Thursday to Friday.”

The Ravens fall to 1-16 overall, 0-14 in conference play.
