Girls drop two over the weekend

The Hillcrest girls lost on Friday night to Columbus, 26-32. Esther Hughes led the way for Hillcrest with 12 points, two blocks and nine rebounds. Yani Gutierrez recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The girls also lost on Saturday night to New London, 42-73. Hughes again led the way for Hillcrest with 15 points and pulled in four rebounds. Meredith Blossom added eight points while Gutierrez added seven points, 11 rebounds and dished out six assists. Sarena Gerber added six points and pulled in six rebounds. Sarah Miller chipped in five points and pulled down five rebounds. Danae McGaffey rounded out the scoring with two points and five rebounds.

“Friday was a tough one to digest,” Hillcrest head coach Kari Heusinkveld said. “We missed double digit layups and eight free throws. If we take care of those little things instead of losing by six, we win handily. I was pleased with the way the girls bounced back on Saturday though, we did a much better job in those areas. We have a lot to work on to be consistently competitive second semester, but the good news is we are in control of that.”

The girls fall to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in conference play. They return to action at home against Highland (3-9, 1-7) on Tuesday night. Tipoff is set for 6 PM.
