Ravens lose to Mediapolis

Hillcrest Academy made the long trip to Mediapolis Tuesday and came home on the short end of a 56-52 heartbreaker to the Bulldogs. The Ravens got out to a 10-2 start, and led 17-9 after one quarter. The second period saw Mediapolis get back into things quickly with a pair of threes. Foul trouble then made things difficult for Hillcrest, and the Bulldogs were able to close within 25-23 at the half.

Mediapolis took the lead halfway through the third period and led 42-37 entering the fourth. The Bulldogs then built the lead to ten at 56-46 with three minutes to play. Hillcrest hung tight, keeping Mediapolis scoreless the rest of the way and cutting the margin to four, but could get no closer.

Eli Ours paced the visitors with 21 points and Kobe Borntrager followed with 13 points. Noah Miller and John Hughes added six points apiece. Borntrager pulled down seven rebounds, Miller had five steals and Ours had three assists.

Coach Dwight Gingerich said “I liked the fact we didn’t quit, and played with heart. We simply broke down in several key situations, including two straight turnovers after we cut it to 45-44 early in the fourth quarter. We will continue to get better as our experience grows.”

The loss drops Hillcrest to 1-2 on the season, and undefeated Pekin comes to Hillcrest Union on Friday.
