American History class visits cemeteries

Chloe Staley, Will Kolck

The American History class taught by Marcus Miller is learning that you can learn “history” from something other than books, documents and papers. The class started at the Joetown Methodist cemetery, then stopped at the Schoettler cemetery, and finished at the Lower Deer Creek cemetery. They were to look for engravings, different symbols “lamb, little children, dove, weeping willow,” a child’s grave, veterans of different wars, and tombstones with a picture or illustration. They were also to note differences between the two bigger cemeteries. Marcus also shared some local history with them. It was a great excuse to get out of the classroom, even on a not so nice morning!
