SALT- Service And Learning Term Q&A

SALT occurs every other year at Hillcrest Academy. You may not have heard of it before; below are answers to some initial questions.

Q #1: WHAT IS IT?Service and Learning Term or SALT is a week of school (these are official school days), but without the tradition school schedule. Instead, students will join faculty for a week of learning outside of the classroom.

Q # 2: WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF SALT?Experiential and authentic learning, service opportunities, community building, cross-cultural exposure and awareness, personal growth and spiritual renewal.

Q #3: WHEN IS IT? | It is held for five days during the week, mid to late March. Some groups travel long distances and may use the weekends before and after.

Q #4: WHERE IS IT?SALT groups range from local to international. Several local groups will explore Washington, Iowa City, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Kalona. Other groups will travel to Illinois, Indiana, Colorado, Mississippi, Kansas, and Puerto Rico.

Q #4: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?Prices range from $32 to $900 (Puerto Rico). Money from student accounts can be used for SALT and some groups (mostly international) will do fundraising to help lower the cost.
