Culinary Camp 2023

CAMP DESCRIPTION: The best place to learn a love of food and nutrition is in the kitchen!

6th – 8th Grade CAMP IS FULL: (1-3pm) Advanced Culinary Camp will be a fun extension of skills learned in the first class and will cover the basics needed to host a dinner party, such as preparing appetizers, a main course, and dessert. By the end of camp, students will learn skills needed to host a meal for friends or family on their own and hopefully have an appetite for continued culinary exploration!

3rd – 5th Grade: (10am-Noon) Beginners Culinary Camp will encourage students to gain a basic understanding of nutrition, use the MyPlate diagram, and begin cooking and baking on their own. During camp, students will learn to read a recipe efficiently and navigate their way around the kitchen using basic tools and techniques. Each day, students will focus on one meal time -breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition to learning to cook the food we learn about, we’ll also get to eat it, of course! By the end of the week, students should be able to plan & prepare a simple meal at home! 

Due to the nature of the class, food allergies should be specified ahead of time in order to make sure all students can enjoy the class to its full extent.

Camp Director, Ranee Brokaw ’01 graduated with an Elementary Education degree from Iowa State University and substitute taught in elementary classrooms for 5 years before getting her FCS endorsement and teaching Foods and Culinary Arts courses at Hillcrest Academy for 6 years. She now teaches her five children at home, where she incorporates cooking as part of their lessons. Ranee has always enjoyed cooking and baking (and eating!) and has a passion to teach others more about food and cooking.

ELIGIBILITY: Camp for students entering 3rd – 5th grade is limited to 16 students.
Camp for students entering 6th – 8th grade is limited to 12 students.

COST: $50.00 per child
Registration can be done here and payment can be made here. The cost of camp includes food and supplies.
