Drum & Strum Music Camp 2024

CAMP DESCRIPTION:  Come and make music with your voice, drums, ukuleles, percussion, Orff instruments, and more with local music instructors, Sheila Raim and Katie Lehman. There’s a place for you at music camp, no matter what your skill level is. There will be a short performance for families on the last day towards the end of camp. Come and join the fun!

Camp Director, Sheila Raim ’81 a local musician and teacher, has ties to Hillcrest Academy both as a graduate and as a former faculty member. During her tenure at IMS, she taught instrumental music and Spanish. She has loved music and teaching her entire life and thrives on passing on that love to students and musicians of all ages.  Sheila holds a bachelor’s degree in music education with an emphasis in violin from Eastern Mennonite University and a master’s degree in Spanish:Teaching from The University of Northern Iowa. She currently serves as a supervising teacher and music program director at the Mid-Prairie Home School Assistance program and teaches privately through HeartStrings Studio. Sheila and her husband, Dan, are the parents of two adult children, Eleya (married to Jesse Shetler) and Ethan, who are also musicians and Hillcrest alumni.

Camp Director, Katie Lehman has a passion for creating music with students and working alongside them to reach their fullest potential as developing artists. She has been teaching private piano lessons for 15 years. Katie studied piano, voice, guitar, music education, elementary education, and special education at the collegiate level. She completed her B.A. in Music Education and her M.A. in Special Education. Over the years, Katie has helped to develop music programs for students Pre-K – 6^th grade at several established schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She also spent several summers directing Southwest Music Camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

LOCATION: Hillcrest Academy, 1421 540th St SW, Kalona, IA

ELIGIBILITY: Camp is for students who are entering 3rd-6th grade and limited to 15 campers.

COST: $50.00 per child

Payment must be made after registering to ensure you child’s spot in the camp due to the capacity limit.
