Bontrager qualifies for state

Senior Leah Bontrager punches ticket to state.

Senior Leah Bontrager won the 800 meter race at the 1A state qualifier in Sigourney Thursday to automatically qualify for the state track and field meet next week.  In 1A only event winners in each of the ten state qualifier meets are automatic qualifiers.   Then the next fourteen best performances across the state also qualify.  Bontrager’s time in the 800 meter race was 2:32.98.  Leah also placed third in the 1500 meter run in 5:33.57.  She also anchored the distance medley relay team to a third place finish.  Malia Yoder and Morgyn Nafziger each ran 200 meters before Delaney Shaw ran 400 meter before handing the baton to Bontrager.  Their time of 4:47.87 was a season best.  Other place winners include Shaw in the long jump placing sixth in 14 feet 1.75 inches.  Yoder tied for eighth in the high jump.  Yoder and Shaw went seventh and eighth in the 200 meter dash in 30.30 and 30.52 seconds respectively.  The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Nafziger, Shaw, Erin Bontrager and Yoder placed tenth in a season best of 57.99 seconds.  The remaining state qualifiers will be announced after all the 1A state qualifier meets take place.  One of those meets was postponed to Friday due to stormy weather.

Quang Huynh competed in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes.  Quang’s most exciting race came in the 100 meter dash when he won his heat in 13.44.
