Ravens Get Big Win Over Indians in Season Home Opener
Hillcrest Academy hosted rival Wapello in the season’s home opener Friday and scored a big 51-43 win over the Indians. Grant Bender paced the Ravens offensively with 25 points, and had team highs of six rebounds and five blocks. Noah Miller put the clamps on returning conference Player of the Year, Maddox Griffin, at the other end of the floor, as the Ravens limited Griffin to one field goal in the first half and nine points for the game.
Hillcrest led 9-7 after one quarter and 19-18 four minutes later, before exploding for a 14-0 run to lead 33-18 at intermission. The run was keyed by three treys from Seth Ours The Ravens led 38-24 with four minutes left in the third period when Wapello went on a 10-2 run of their own to close the quarter down 40-34. The Indians continued the comeback and cut it to two at 43-41 with six minutes to play before Hillcrest settled in and responded, holding Wapello to just two points the rest of the way. Miller and Bender were both 3-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
Ours finished the night with nine points, Miller tallied eight, and Jace Rempel knocked down two from distance for six points. Miller dished for six assists and Luke Schrock had three steals. The Ravens were 78 percent from the line, and 47 percent from the floor, in an improved effort from the last game. Aiden Krabill drew a pair of charges to go with four rebounds.
Coach Dwight Gingerich said, “A win over Wapello is always a big win. Our execution was very improved over Tuesday night and it was great to play at home. I thought we played together and were on the same page in a much better way than in our last game.”
The Ravens go to 1-1 on the season and next play Tuesday at Louisa-Muscatine.
